NCLE partners respond to 2026 A-Level modern foreign language results
- 1.3% increase in Spanish
- 4.1% increase in other modern languages
- 0.4% increase in French
- 3.1% increase in German

Vicky Gough, British Council Schools Adviser, said:
“Congratulations to all students receiving their A-level language results today. It is fantastic to see an increase across all languages offered at A-Level this year, especially German which has seen a decrease in uptake over the last few years.
“These results clearly show there is an appetite for learning a modern foreign language and we know how language learning not only broadens horizons but deepens cultural understanding.
“However, our latest Language Trends England report found recruitment of qualified modern foreign language teachers remained a significant issue with some A-Level classes not running if a minimum number of pupils is not met.
“We must continue to bring all languages to life through exchanges, cultural programmes and real-world connections to allow students to understand why languages matter.”

“Today we celebrate not only excellent A-Level results in languages, but also the ambition, resilience, and determination of young people who have chosen to continue their language learning to a higher level.
“It is a decision they will not regret. Languages and intercultural understanding open doors to academic and vocational pathways, adding value to every profession and to every sector.
“In an interconnected world, young people need a global mindset, the ability to communicate across cultures, and the flexibility to navigate difference – qualities that are increasingly recognised and valued highly by employers.
“Language learning and international experience transform us, shaping the people that we become.
“We encourage school leaders, parents, and those successful students of A Level today to promote the value of A Level languages to future students, particularly those making their A Level choices for the future.
“Whether they pursue sciences or humanities, the choice to study a language at A Level does not need to be an either/or decision; it is relevant to both.
“Languages enrich every discipline, strengthen every pathway, and expand every learner’s life chances.”

“The increase in A-level German entries is encouraging and reflects the commitment of teachers, schools and students across the country.
“While challenges for language learning remain, these results show that young people continue to value the opportunities that languages can offer.
